ACADEMY 2009: August 1 - September 4, 2009
PULSE Presents is excited to announce our collaboration with Conner Contemporary Art in their ninth annual ACADEMY Exhibition. An invitational survey of outstanding work by recent fine art graduates of regional college art programs, the show is curated by exhibition founder, Jamie Smith, Ph.D.
This year PULSE will award one of the ACADEMY exhibiting artists an exhibition space at PULSE Miami 2009. Jurors Helen Allen, Executive Director of PULSE and Ed Winkleman, Director of Winkleman Gallery, NYC and Gloria Nauden, Executive Director of the DC Commission on Arts and Humanities will announce the winner on Saturday, August 1 at 7pm.
Participating artists include: Celina Amaya, Danny Baskin, Alan Callander, Charles Clary, Margot Ellis, Kyle Ford, Jeremy Flick, Corey Grimsley, Steve Ioli, Casey Reed Johnson, Jin Young Kang, Patrick McDonough, Aziza Murray, Igor Pasternak, Ding Ren, Alex Roulette, Andrew Schrock, Ryan Schroeder and Rafael Soldi.
Represented institutions: AmericanUniversity, Catholic University of America, CorcoranCollege or Art and Design, Georgetown University, George Washington University, Maryland Institute College of Art, Savannah College of Art and Design, University of Maryland.
Nearly 150 graduates have participated since ACADEMY's 2001 debut. Some have achieved international recognition, exhibiting at the HirshhornMuseum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC; the Brooklyn Museum of Art, New York; Nassauischen Kunstverein, Wiesbaden, Germany and The British Museum, London, England.
In conjunction with this year's exhibition, Conner Contemporary will also host :
No Artist Left Behind / Washington Project for the Arts
Washington Project for the Arts will co-host a workshop No Artist Left Behind: The Top 10 Things Every Artist Should Know with Heather Darcy Bhandari and Jonathan Melber, authors of ART/WORK: Everything You Need to Know (and Do) As You Pursue Your Art Career (2009). The authors will discuss career management and business and legal issues for artists; book signing immediately to follow. The NALB Series is a professional development initiative created by WPA to provide resources and workshops to DC area visual artists.
The WPA / workshop will be held Saturday, August 1: 4 - 6pm.
Opening night reception: Saturday, August 1: 6 - 8pm. The winning artist will be announced at 7pm.
Conner Contemporary Art is located at 1358 Florida Avenue, NE -Washington, DC 20002, in the H Street Corridor/ The H Street shuttle runs from 5pm to 2am daily. Gallery hours: Wednesday - Saturday 11-5pm.
