I had the chance to stop by Clampart's Museum of Unnatural History opening last night. I expected it to be a solid group show, with a nice selection of fabulous photographers. Clampart delivered, as usual, and I was really pleased with the show. But I was even more excited to discover a couple gems that I hadn't seen before! I think there is nothing better than going to a show and coming out feeling enriched and better informed in what it is they were presenting.
Among the work I was stunned by was a haunting picture by Richard Barnes. The picture shows a large space with an arched ceiling. A beautiful diorama stands in the background as a backdrop for a monumental giraffe, wrapped in plastic as it is lowered by a pulley. The whole magic of it and the context of this exhibition led me to believe this was a set or a miniature model but I was pleased to know it was all real. I love this picture and I can't help but feel like child going to the museum for the first time and pulling on dad's sleeve to come see the giraffe!
The other pleasant surprise was Lori Nix' platinum palladium prints. So used to her large scale color work, I did not recognize them as hers until somebody pointed it out to me. It's always nice to see an artist who knows who they are and do what they know do well. But it can also be a problem when they fail to evolve or experiment within their own thesis. I was pleased to see Nix was not scared to transition to the platinum palladium print and still stay true to herself. Technically the work is very similar in that they are miniature models created by the artist, but the platinum palladium process really gives it a different character. I'm interested in how this will develop.
