Moving Through Life

Rafael Soldi

Life is so curious. In so many ways it is in one's own hands, even though in most cases it will do as it pleases. A great deal of luck, however, good or bad, is integral in pretty much everything that occurs to us and it's important to give it the credit that it deserves.

This is a lucky time in my life and times like this don't come often, I've been working really hard for the past few years to be ready for when luck strikes. It misses most times, and we just have to wait for it to find us again.  Always be ready, never give up.

I have lots of cool news to share but I'm waiting for some things to solidify before I share. In the meantimes I am excited to share that I will be presenting two different panels at the upcoming Society for Photographic Education National Conference in Chicago. One of the panels was proposed in conjunction with good friends Elle Perez and Jessica Emily Marx; we will be presenting on the importance of student engagement, and practical learning in the academic environment. We will present the Wilgus Gallery as a model for student empowerment, recruitment and departmental development.

I will also participate on a second panel, "Queer Photography: Queer art in schools, studios, galleries and beyond," which was proposed by David N. Martin, and will be presented alongside with Jess T. Dugan and Logan Rollins as well.

Some small notes:

> I will be in New York City  from Sept. 7 through Sept. 11. I hope I get to see a lot of you.

>Today is my sister's 16th birthday. I've been photographing her since she was a young girl and it has been a joy to watch her become a mature, sensitive woman. Happy birthday Mica!
